Panelite Clearshade IGU

Panelite's ClearShade Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) provides shading and both thermal and sound insulation using a polycarbonate honeycomb core.

System Performance

ClearShade IGU transmits about half of the light that reaches its surface. Sun protection is achieved by its honeycomb inlet, which, depending on the chosen pattern, disperses light and reduces direct solar transmission in different ways. Its partially obstructive body gives some privacy as well as sound and heat insulation. Custom options can also yield stronger insulation, though the standard package is suitable for most uses. Different colors for both the inner core and the outer glass can be chosen to customize the appearance of the unit. Very versatile, the system can be installed in walls, doors, ceilings, facades, or in wet areas such as showers without additional deterioration or a decrease in effectiveness. Because the system still transmits significant amounts of light, it should be used in conjunction with another shading system to fully screen sunlight. For a more advanced lighting analysis and project specific results, we recommend using the Lightsolve program (under development).

System Description

ClearShade IGU is comprised of three layers: a 12.7mm (.5") airspace with a Panelite ClearShade honeycomb core surrounded by two 6.4mm (.25") panes of clear tempered glass (the inboard and outboard lites). This forms a 1" thick system that is compatible with any curtain wall system on the market. The individual parts also come in different forms, giving the consumer alternatives to choose from for the overall system. The cell diameter within the core can be 6.4mm (0.25") or 3.2mm (0.17"), with laminated or tempered glass around it. Both of these can also be a variety of colors, though the glass has more options among its standard colors. An optional PVB layer can also be added for additional color versatility, while the outer glass can be acid-etched (for visual effects) or low-e coated (for additional thermal protection). The maximum size of the individual panes is 1.2m (48") by 3m (120"), with a minimum order size of 46.5 square meters (500 sq ft) for standard colors and 186 square meters (2000 sq ft) for special orders.
