RETROSolar produces new essential sparparts as well as complete systems in the field of lighting and daylighting technologies. The company supplies reflector systems, Venetian blinds, ceilings and luminaires.
The RETROSystems are patented by Dr.-Ing. Helmut Koester, principal of Koester Lichtplanung.
The RETROFlex Louver System allows a controlled distribution of daylight and a minimization of overheating and glare issues by using concave toothed blinds in a horizontal position, a configuration that allows to maintain a good contact with the outside.
System Performance
Retro reflecting louvers improve upon conventional Venetian blinds by providing protection against low-angle winter sunlight and high-angle summer sunlight, thus avoiding both overheating and glare issues without darkening the interior, as the blinds are kept open. It is indeed possible to keep the slats in horizontal position by combining concave profiles with a microstructured prismatic surface. This provides a good visual transmission through the blinds (≈70% of the glazed area) and a good diffuse distribution of light inside. To control sunlight while letting daylight penetrate, RETROFlex louvers offer a zoned configuration of the slats: in the upper part of the glass the louvers are placed in inverse position (prisms are placed on the convex side of the louver, facing downwards) for active light directing, and in the vision area it uses retro louvers (prisms on the concave side of the louver, facing upwards) for solar and glare control. For a more advanced lighting analysis and project specific results, we recommend using the Lightsolve program (under development).

System Description
RETROFlex louvers are made of extruded aluminum, bent into concave or convex shapes, with the micro-prism structure rolled on the top surface, and a white or glossy coat on the underside (standard finish up to 86% reflective). These louvers are available in two sizes: 50m and 80 mm in width (for interior and exterior applications, respectively), of customized length and with a louver spacing of approximately 56mm. The blinds can be gradually adjusted (lifted, lowered or twisted), which allows multiple louvers to be moved simultaneously, either individually or in groups, depending on the current sun angle and lighting conditions. If necessary, it is also possible to completely open the louvers in both areas to provide free vision, the response time for the up/down switch being 4 seconds. The system can be manual and automatically operated via a switch or remote control. The system can be installed vertically and within roof systems. Energy savings are expected to come from reducing cooling and electric lighting loads.
